Biochar is an incredible product if you haven’t tried it in your soil. Due to its high porosity it has multiple uses in your soil. It is an excellent housing space for beneficial microorganisms. It enhances soil structure, water retention, decreases acidity, reduces nitrous oxide emissions, improves porosity, regulates nitrogen leaching, improves electrical conductivity, and is great for aeration. We recommend a 5 – 10% mixture in your soil. Adding it to your compost bin is another excellent option. Biochar is mostly carbon so adding it to a nitrogen saturated bin will be very beneficial. Around 10 – 30 % of the total carbon will be available for microbes to consume. We recommend 3 – 25% mixture in a compost bin. Biochar is fantastic at aeration and holding moisture so you wont have to turn your pile as often. As a final benefit to the compost bin, being that biochar is carbon negative it will help mask some of the smells in the early phases of composting.

We use high temperature hardwood to create our biochar. You can find a variety of sizes from fine dust to small 1 inch chucks in your order. This size variance allows us to hit the wider range of the capabilities of biochar from high water holding capacity, microorganism, and aeration. If you are looking to charge your biochar we recommend mixing equal parts with worm castings for incredible results.
