Most expanded shale you will find in the US was created in Texas. Expanded shales original form was created in the cretaceous period when Texas was a lakebed. The lakebed sediments hardened under pressure to form shales. Those shales as well as clay and slates are broken up and then heated in a rotary kiln to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat causes the particles to expand and create a internal and external porous area. The result is a light weight aeration material that is fantastic for plant growth. It can be used for living soil blends, garden beds, succulents, hydroponics, or correcting heavy clay soils.

$14.95 – $39.95
Our expanded shale is from Texas. It’s 3/8″ x 1/4″ in size making it an incredible aeration material for growing your plants in. Expanded shale is extremely porous it can hold up to 38% of its weight in water, but still heavy enough to not float up into you soil mix like other aeration material would. For mixing in a soil blend we recommend 10-40% by volume.
